Máncora

A Peruvian beach break

Máncora

Máncora is soaked in sun all year round and offers kilometres of sandy beaches, water perfect for surfing and fresh seafood straight from local fishing boats.

A favourite holiday destination for many Peruvians as well as a popular stop off for travellers, it’s easy to see why so many flock to Máncora to experience the good life. The fact that there isn’t a great deal to do acts as its blessing rather than its curse. The beach-side resort is a perfect retreat from the bustle of downtown Lima or the chilly heights of the Andes. You can’t help but relax here.

There’s a vast array of accommodation available, much of it mere steps away from the glorious beaches. This ranges from backpacker hostels to upmarket hotels catering for anyone looking to get away from it all.

Despite being tucked away in the north west of the country, near the Ecuadorian border, its convenient location right next to the Panamerican highway makes Máncora easily accessible by car. There are also several bus companies operating services directly to the town from Lima, Tumbes and Piura. Some of the main bus companies can be found under the public transport section for Peru.

Surfing

For anyone wanting to do some surfing during their stay in Máncora there are several shops offering the purchase and hire of equipment. Most of them also run classes for anyone from beginners to advanced surfers of all ages. The relatively small size of the town means they are never too hard to find. Most don’t have websites but you can easily pop in to ask about any services they might offer. Here is one that does have an online portal:

For those wanting an even bigger adrenaline rush, kitesurfing has seen a rise in popularity in Máncora over recent years. Some of these are run from surf shops but recently there has also been an increase in specialised kitesurfing shops and clubs.
